This move will continue to benefit around 96 million households, he said.

The government had previously declared in May 2021 that the subsidy for 12 cylinders per year would be given to 90 million beneficiaries for FY23.

Thakur added that the decision to extend the subsidies was taken to alleviate the pressure of high cooking gas prices.

The total cost of this extension for the Centre would be Rs 13,780 crore, with Rs 6,100 crore for 2022-23 and Rs 7,680 crore for 2023-24.

Launched in 2016, the scheme aimed to provide LPG connections to women belonging to below-poverty-line families.

Additionally, the government has announced an increase in the dearness allowance for over one crore employees, from 38% to 42% of the basic pay or pension, retroactively effective from January 1, 2023.

The government also fixed the minimum support price of raw jute at Rs 5,050 per quintal for the 2023-24 season, ensuring a return of 63.20% over the all-India weighted average cost of production.
