Sensex, Nifty down 2% each at open as counting of votes for Lok Sabha polls begins

Mumbai/IBNS: Indian benchmark indices opened in the red on Tuesday (June 4) as the counting of votes for Lok Sabha election begins with showing BJP-led NDA in the lead in the early trend, reports said.

According to reports, at the opening bell, Sensex had plunged 1708.54 points, or 2.23 percent, at 74,760.24 and Nifty was down 488.55 points, or 2.1 percent, at 22,775.35.

About 891 shares advanced and 1,572 shares declined, while 121 shares remain unchanged.

Only three out of the 30 stocks on the BSE Sensex -- Sun Pharma, Nestle India, and Hindustan Unilever -- were trading in the red, while NTPC, SBI, Power Grid Corp., Larsen & Toubro, and HDFC Bank, were the top drags, as reported by Mint.

Monday's (June 3) trading session concluded with the benchmark equity indices recording gains.

The NSE Nifty 50 surged by 733.20 points, or 3.25 percent, to settle at 23,263.90, while the BSE Sensex soared by 2507.47 points, or 3.39 percent, to 76,468.78.

The Bank Nifty index also ended higher, rising by 1996 points, or 4.07 percent, to settle at 50,979.95.
