He was admitted to hospital for more than two weeks.

Mishra is survived by his son, tabla player Ramkumar Mishra, and three daughters.

Regarded as one of the greatest exponents of the Kirana gharana of Hindustani classical music, Mishra was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2010 and Padma Vibhushan in 2020.

Often called the "Living legend of Banaras Gharana", his music represents the rich tradition of Varanasi.

Mourning his demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X, "I am deeply saddened by the demise of the renowned classical singer Pandit Channulal Mishra ji. He remained dedicated throughout his life to the enrichment of Indian art and culture. Along with taking classical music to the masses, he also made an invaluable contribution to establishing Indian tradition on the global stage.

"It is my good fortune that I always received his affection and blessings. In the year 2014, he was also my proposer from the Varanasi seat. In this hour of grief, I express my deepest condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti!"

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath wrote on X, "The demise of Pandit Channulal Mishra ji, a connoisseur of Indian classical music and the renowned classical singer adorned with the 'Padma Vibhushan', is extremely heartbreaking and an irreparable loss to the realm of classical music. Humble tribute to him!

"You dedicated your entire life to the upliftment of Indian classical music. Your singing serves as an inspiration for artists pursuing the art. I pray to Lord Shri Ram that the departed soul attains eternal peace and that his grieving family, followers, and admirers are granted the strength to bear this profound sorrow."
