From search to simulated worlds: Google’s project genie changes the AI game
Google is taking another bold step toward immersive artificial intelligence, opening access to Project Genie — an experimental prototype designed to let users generate and explore dynamic virtual worlds in real time.
In a recent blog post, the company said: “In August, we previewed Genie 3, a general-purpose world model capable of generating diverse, interactive environments.”
Even in its early stages, trusted testers were able to create a wide range of immersive worlds and experiences, uncovering new use cases for the technology. “The next step is to broaden access through a dedicated, interactive prototype focused on immersive world creation,” Google said.
Access to Project Genie has now been unveiled for Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States.
What Is Project Genie?
According to Google, the experimental prototype allows users to create, explore and remix their own interactive worlds in real time.
At its core is a “world model” — an AI system that simulates the dynamics of an environment, predicting how it evolves and how actions influence outcomes.
Google DeepMind has previously built agents tailored for specific environments such as Chess and Go. However, the company notes that achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) requires systems capable of navigating the complexity and diversity of the real world.
“To meet this challenge and support our AGI mission, we developed Genie 3,” the company said.
Real-Time World Generation
Unlike static 3D environments, Genie 3 dynamically generates the path ahead in real time as users move and interact within the world. It simulates physics and environmental interactions, enabling highly dynamic and responsive virtual spaces.
Google says the system’s breakthrough consistency allows it to simulate a wide range of real-world scenarios — from robotics training and animation modelling to fictional storytelling, location exploration, and historical recreations.
Building on research conducted with trusted testers across industries and domains, Google is now taking the next step by expanding access through Project Genie, offering a glimpse into how immersive, AI-generated environments could shape the future of digital experiences.
