Describing the decision as a “significant day” for the Indian armed forces and Agniveers, General Subramani said the Cabinet had created an opportunity for recruits to continue their association with the military beyond their initial four-year engagement.
The revised arrangement comes as the first batch of Agniveers approaches the end of its four-year service period.
Centre extends Agniveer service tenure
Explaining the decision, General Subramani recalled that the Agnipath scheme, introduced on June 14, 2022, provided for continuous performance assessment and periodic reviews of recruits.
He said the feedback received on the performance of Agniveers had been “very positive” as the first batch neared the completion of its initial tenure.
The extension is intended to provide an additional opportunity for Agniveers to remain associated with the armed forces rather than return to civilian life immediately after completing four years of service.
Selection process for regular military service
Under the existing arrangement, 25 percent of Agniveers are selected on merit for absorption into the regular armed forces after completing their four-year tenure.
The revised provision offers the remaining 75 percent an opportunity to serve for an additional two years.
General Subramani said those who wish to continue in the armed forces after completing the extended period will be considered for enrolment through an objective selection process.
