Fishermen race to rescue elephant calf
The calf was swept away after water was released from the Gajoldoba barrage in Jalpaiguri on Monday morning.
As the young elephant struggled against the strong current, the fishermen rushed to its rescue in two boats.
They travelled approximately four kilometres along the river before managing to reach the calf and pull it into one of the boats.
The fishermen later carried the calf through Gajoldoba towards the Nipania forest, where it was released near a herd of elephants.
"The mother elephant came ahead and accepted the calf. Eventually, they walked towards the herd that was nearby. We are monitoring the calf's condition," a forester was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.
The circumstances that led to the calf becoming separated from its herd remain unknown.
Forest officials are monitoring the calf's condition following the rescue.
