Evening students allowed till 9.30 PM
According to a circular issued by Dutta, only students attending evening courses will be allowed to remain on campus beyond 8 pm, and they must carry valid university identification.
Evening-course students can stay until 9.30 pm, in line with their class timings.
For other students, gatherings will not be permitted after 8 pm at locations including the university ground, canteens and the area opposite Subarna Jayanti Bhavan.
The restriction may be relaxed during university fests and other student activities, but the administration has advised that such events should, as far as possible, conclude by 9 pm.
ID cards mandatory for night entry
The university has also reiterated that students must show their JU identity cards while entering the campus between 7 pm and 7 am.
The administration has further reiterated its prohibition on narcotics and other illegal substances on campus.
Security personnel, including the night in-charge, have been tasked with controlling entry and exit points and deciding whether access should be permitted after 8 pm.
Rules follow recent campus incidents
The tighter restrictions come against the backdrop of recent incidents on the Jadavpur University campus.
An assault involving students took place in connection with a general body meeting that continued late into the evening.
The campus also witnessed vandalism on August 19 and 20, which was allegedly linked to right-wing supporters.
The latest measures are aimed at strengthening security and maintaining discipline, the acting registrar said.
More lights, CCTV cameras planned
Dutta said the university was conducting an audit to identify areas requiring better security infrastructure.
“We are also conducting an audit to install more lights and CCTV cameras,” he said.
He added that strict action would be taken against misconduct and intimidation on campus.
The administration is also examining graffiti and posters put up on the walls of Aurobindo Bhavan, a Grade I heritage structure. Dutta said such activity was not permissible under heritage protection rules.
VC had earlier called for earlier exit
Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee had earlier said restrictions were necessary because students were remaining on campus until 10 pm and beyond.
He had said day scholars should ideally leave by 8 pm, while evening-course students should be permitted to remain until 9.30 pm because their classes continue until around 9 pm.
The university has said the restrictions are primarily intended to ensure the safety and security of students, faculty members and campus residents, while maintaining law and order.
