Thiruvananthapuram/IBNS: Ending 10 days of speculation, the Congress on Thursday announced V. D. Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Kerala.

Satheesan’s name was announced by AICC general secretary and Kerala in-charge Deepa Dasmunsi.

Who is V.D. Satheesan?

Satheesan is a senior Congress leader from Kerala and one of the most prominent faces of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in the state.

Born on Oct. 12, 1964, in Ernakulam district, Satheesan represents the Paravur Assembly constituency.

He has been elected multiple times as an MLA and is known for his sharp speeches and strong presence in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.

Political career

Satheesan began his political journey through the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student wing of the Congress party.

He later rose through the ranks of the Youth Congress and the state Congress organisation before emerging as a key leader in Kerala politics.

In 2021, he became the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly after the Congress-led UDF lost the Assembly elections.

Rise to prominence

Satheesan gained statewide attention for aggressively targeting the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government on issues including corruption allegations, the gold smuggling controversy, governance, and law-and-order concerns.

He is regarded as one of the reform-oriented faces within the Kerala Congress leadership.
