You are well educated, earn for yourself: Supreme Court slams woman demanding Rs. 12 cr, BMW and flat in alimony
New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court on Tuesday rapped a woman for seeking Rs. 12 crore a year, a house in Mumbai and a BMW car in alimony from her husband stating a qualified woman should earn for themselves, media reports said.
Chief Justice of India BR Gavai made the observation when he was hearing an alimony case where the woman made such demands following separation from her husband after 18 months of their marriage.
"You are so well educated. You should work and earn for yourself instead of asking for it," said the CJI.
CJI Gavai added as quoted by India Today, "Your marriage lasted only 18 months, and now you want a BMW too? One crore every month?"
The woman argued that her husband is wealthy and claimed he had sought the divorce accusing her of a schizophrenia patient.
Senior advocate Madhavi Divan, who appeared for the husband, objected to such extravagant demands.
CJI Gavai has asked both the parties to submit their financial documents.
The CJI has noted the husband's past income of Rs. 2.5 crore salary and Rs. 1 crore in bonuses during his employment, the channel reported.
The top court bench said the wife won't be able to claim rights over the properties of her husband's father.
CJI Gavai asked the woman to either accept a burden-free flat or Rs. 4 crore and seek a job.
When the woman alleged her husband's FIR cost her job, the court said as quoted by India Today, "You file the FIR, we will cancel that too. We will direct that no party will initiate any criminal proceedings against each other."
The court has reserved its order.
