In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with Cachar Police, apprehended a suspected drug trafficker and seized heroin valued at approximately Rs 60 lakh on Silchar Bypass Road in Assam's Cachar district, officials said on Friday.
Acting on specific intelligence, the joint team intercepted the suspect during the operation conducted on October 23. A search led to the recovery of seven soap cases containing around 100 grams of heroin. The team also seized a Yamaha motorcycle allegedly used to transport the contraband.
The arrested individual, a resident of Bishnupur in Cachar district, has been handed over to Cachar Police along with the recovered heroin and the seized motorcycle for further investigation.
A case has been registered under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further legal proceedings are underway.
The successful operation is part of the Assam Rifles' sustained efforts, in coordination with state police, to curb the trafficking of narcotics and dismantle drug-smuggling networks operating in the region.
