Assam Rifles, Customs seize foreign cigarettes worth Rs 65 Lakh in Tripura
In a major success against cross-border smuggling, Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with Customs officials, seized a huge consignment of foreign cigarettes from the Chakma Ghat area of Teliamura under Khowai district of Tripura on Monday.
The operation was launched in the morning during which the joint team intercepted a Tata truck bearing registration number TR-01-AP-1717. Upon thorough inspection, 65 cartons containing approximately 6.5 lakh foreign cigarettes were recovered from the vehicle. The seized consignment is estimated to be worth around Rs 65 lakh in the international market.
During the operation, one individual identified as Giashuddin, son of Maynul Haque and a resident of Baitakhal Basti village under Patharkandi in Karimganj district of Assam, was apprehended on the spot.
The seized contraband, along with the detained individual, has been handed over to the Customs department for further investigation and necessary legal action.
Assam Rifles, in close coordination with other enforcement agencies, reiterated its commitment to the Government’s “Nasha Mukt Tripura” initiative and continues to act decisively against illegal activities to maintain peace and security in the region.
