An incident involving the assault of an elderly woman and her son-in-law, along with the snatching of a gold chain, has created widespread panic in Sonamura town under Sepahijala district.
Sources said that on Thursday, this incident occurred in broad daylight near the Srimantapur Immigration Office. Panicked local residents reported that the victimized woman filed a written complaint at the Sonamura police station regarding the matter.
Tapash Das, OC of the Sonamura police station said that the police have registered the complaint and initiated an investigation.
The complainant, a resident of Srimantapur named Shaphiya Khatun, alleged that she and her daughter's husband were heading toward Agartala. For their journey to Agartala, they hired a rental car from home. As the vehicle reached near the Srimantapur Immigration Office, the accused blocked their way by positioning a bike in front of the car. Immediately upon stopping the car, the accused began assaulting the woman. When her son-in-law stepped in to protect her, he was also beaten up. Furthermore, the miscreant snatched a gold chain weighing approximately 1.5 tolas from around the woman's neck and fled the scene. Later, with the assistance of locals, they went to the police station to file a complaint. As the woman was injured in the snatching incident, she had to seek treatment at Agartala based hospital.
