Congress meets DGP, warns of statewide mass protest over law and order situation

A delegation of Tripura Pradesh Congress led by president met the DGP in a deputation demanding Special Investigation Team (SIT) for investigation of Ashish Das murder case by an IPS officer and also demanded immediate steps by police administration to take concrete steps over deteriorating law and order.

After their deputation, PCC president Ashish Kumar Saha speaking with media persons in front of police headquarters on Monday afternoon also warned of mass protest due to poor law and order. He demanded urgent government intervention to restore peace in the state

Saha has raised serious concerns over what he described as a breakdown of law and order across the state and requested the Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar to ensure democratic rights of opposition political parties.

Highlighting the recent attacks on their party MLAs Sudip Roy Barman and Gopal Chandra Roy and other political violence on opposition supporters in different parts of the state, Saha alleged that many of these acts were carried out by miscreants owing their allegiance with ruling BJP and despite police complaints, most of the time police remained as silent spectators.

The miscreants, supported by the ruling party, are constantly attacking opposition leaders, said Saha and warned that if the police fail to respond decisively, the Congress would not hesitate to launch a statewide movement.

He also alleged that political offices had been vandalised, vehicles destroyed, and public meetings disrupted regularly. “Law and order have deteriorated across the state and sections of ruling BJP workers are attacking opposition as they lost their ground,” said Saha and added that in desperation of losing people's support, BJP workers continue their attacks on oppositions.

Saha also highlighted a recent murder in Surma under Dhalai District, where a man named Asish Das was allegedly killed in a planned attack. The victim’s family has pointed fingers at local leaders affiliated with the ruling party.

Congress have demanded the formation of an SIT headed by an IPS officer for a proper investigation, said Saha and urged the DGP to take urgent steps over proper investigation of Ashish Das murder case.

He also claimed that police inaction is one of the prime reasons for deteriorating law and order situation in Tripura and urged the DGP to make Tripura police accountable towards the common people of the state.
