The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee on Thursday staged a protest rally in Agartala demanding a fair and impartial investigation by a sitting judge of the High Court of Tripura into the recent death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar.
The protest march, called by the Tripura Congress, began at the Congress Bhavan premises at around 4 pm and passed through various parts of the city before reaching the residence of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, where party workers held a demonstration.
During the protest, Congress leaders and supporters raised slogans demanding that all circumstances surrounding the "mysterious" death of DGP Dhankar be thoroughly investigated and the truth be brought to light.
The demonstrators also accused the BJP-led state government of failing to maintain law and order, alleging that Tripura had been turned into a "crime state." They further held the Chief Minister responsible for the alleged rise in corruption and criminal activities and demanded his resignation.
During their protest demonstration, senior Congress leader MLA Sudip Roy Barman claimed that after the tragic and mysterious death of DGP Anurag Dhankar, he found the body of the deceased at the morgue of GB Hospital and added that he has very much suspicion after seeing the body of the DGP.
“I think its not a simple suicide by hanging and reiterated that judicial enquiry by any sitting High Court judge is very much need of the hour,” said Sudip.
He also said that the Chief Minister of the state should immediately order for judicial enquiry over the mysterious death of DGP before tampering with evidence.
Among those who participated in the protest were Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Ashish Kumar Saha, Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and MLA Sudip Roy Barman, Sadar District Congress Committee president Tanmoy Roy, Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha, Sadar District Mahila Congress president Rupa Roy Das, student leader Amir Hossain, and other senior party leaders.
The Congress leaders reiterated its demand for a judicial probe led by a sitting judge of the High Court of Tripura, saying such an inquiry was necessary to ensure transparency and public confidence in the investigation into the DGP's death.
