In two separate successful operations, Tripura police arrested five drug smugglers including three fake journalists and recovered huge quantities of dry Cannabis (Ganja) from Kamalpur of Dhalai district and Udaipur Railway station of Gomati district on Sunday.

Police sources said that three alleged drug traffickers posing as journalists were arrested while attempting to smuggle cannabis to another state using a vehicle bearing a “Press” sticker.

 Acting on information, police at the Durga Chowmuhani Naka checkpoint in Kamalpur subdivision intercepted a private car with registration of Assam state on Sunday. During the search, officers recovered 21.5 kilograms of cannabis from the vehicle.

Police sources added that the accused had affixed a press sticker to the vehicle and were allegedly impersonating journalists in an attempt to avoid suspicion while transporting the contraband.

The seized cannabis was reportedly being transported from Agartala to Bihar state. The three accused, all from Bihar state, were taken into custody, and further investigation into the case is underway.

In another operation, the Government Railway Police (GRP) of Udaipur station, based on secret information, arrested two youths before their boarding to Kolkata bound Kanchanjungha express.

During search of their bags, police recovered a total of 7.5 kilograms of dry Ganja under the possessions of two drug peddlers, identified as Dilwar Hussain (25) and Arif Hussain (18) of Kathaliya area of Sonamura under Sepahijala district.

Meanwhile, on Sunday all the drug peddlers arrested from Kamalpur and Udaipur were produced before respective local courts with police remand appeals under specific cases of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
