Five persecuted Bangladeshi minorities detained by police at Kamalpur
Five members of a persecuted minority community from Bangladesh, travelling from Agartala to Kamalpur, were arrested by Tripura Police at a Naka point during routine checking on Monday night.
According to police sources, personnel conducting regular vehicle checks at the Srirampur Naka point under Kamalpur police station in Dhalai district detained five Bangladeshi nationals — two women, two men and a child.
During preliminary interrogation, the detained individuals, all belonging to the minority Hindu community, stated that they had been facing years of persecution by majority groups in Bangladesh. They claimed that they were forced to flee their homeland and enter Indian territory without valid travel documents. On their way to Kamalpur from Agartala, they were intercepted and arrested by police.
The detainees alleged that survival in Bangladesh had become impossible for them due to extreme torture by fundamentalist groups. They further said they were prepared to die but would not return to Bangladesh under any circumstances.
Police confirmed that on Tuesday, all five Bangladeshi nationals were produced before a local court, which remanded them to jail custody till December 20.
