Frequent road blockades in the name of pressing demands have increasingly become a major inconvenience for the general public, often disrupting normal life and causing immense hardship to commuters. A similar situation unfolded on Tuesday on the Gandachhara–Amarpur road, where a prolonged blockade brought traffic to a complete standstill.
The blockade was staged at the Gatiram Para area, where three roads converge. Members of the indigenous community sat on the road in protest, completely cutting off communication on the Gandachhara–Amarpur route. As a result, numerous passengers, government employees, and daily commuters were stranded for hours.
Speaking to the media from the protest site, the local community leader of Gatiram Para area alleged that the area has been facing power outages, a drinking water crisis, and severely damaged roads for nearly a month. Despite repeatedly informing the concerned officials of Amarpur Sub-Division about these issues, no effective action had been taken, he claimed. Frustrated by the administration’s inaction, the residents resorted to blocking the road. He also alleged that despite informing public representatives several times, no one visited the area to address their grievances. According to him, the present “double-engine government” has failed to fulfill the basic needs of ordinary citizens.
Although the incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Amarpur Sub-Division, no administrative officials initially arrived at the spot even after the blockade had continued for several hours. This further angered the protesters. Meanwhile, a large number of vehicles, including small and heavy vehicles, remained stranded along with hundreds of passengers.
After being stuck for a long time, some commuters reportedly informed Gandacherra Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Abhijit Singh Yadav, about the situation. Following his intervention, officials from Amarpur reached the protest site. After several rounds of discussions and assurances from the administration, the indigenous protesters finally withdrew the blockade around 12:30 pm.
However, the prolonged disruption reportedly prevented many government employees from reaching their workplaces on time. Repeated incidents of road blockades in different parts of the subdivision have also caused serious inconvenience to ordinary people and disrupted normal transportation.
Local residents believe that unless the administration addresses public grievances in a timely manner, such protests and road blockades may continue to increase in the future.
