A government employee was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a room at Ginger Hotel in Agartala on Tuesday evening, triggering panic in the area.
The deceased was identified as Vishal Akash Das (35), an employee of the Agriculture Department of the Tripura government, who was posted in Sabroom under South Tripura district.
According to police sources, Vishal earlier had a house in the Salbagan area near the BSF headquarters, which he had reportedly sold recently. On Monday evening, he checked into the hotel located opposite the New Capital Complex (NCC) police station.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of NCC police station, Prajit Malakar, said that Vishal did not come out of his room since Tuesday morning. In the evening, hotel staff repeatedly knocked on the door but received no response. Following repeated unsuccessful attempts to contact him, the hotel authorities informed the police and firefighters.
After reaching the hotel, police, with the assistance of hotel staff, opened the room and found Vishal lying dead on the bed. Police also recovered a purported suicide note from the room and detected a strong smell of pesticide, the OC said.
The body was later shifted to the GB Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination, and police have launched an investigation into the incident.
During the preliminary investigation, police came to know that the deceased was allegedly suffering from mental depression. However, officials said that the case is being investigated from all possible angles, and appropriate legal action will be taken if any foul play is detected.
The OC added that the exact cause and nature of death would be confirmed only after the forensic and post-mortem reports are received.
