IMD forecasts week-long rain, thunderstorms across Tripura; heavy rain alert for northern districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Agartala station has issued a seven-day weather forecast warning of widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across Tripura, with potential heavy rainfall in northern parts of the state later this week.
According to the evening bulletin released on Sunday evening of by IMD, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected to occur at most places across the state on April 26–27. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph are likely at isolated locations.
From April 27 to April 29, rainfall activity is expected to continue at a few places across Tripura. During this period, districts including North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai, Khowai and West Tripura may experience thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, while other districts could see slightly lower wind speeds of 30–40 kmph.
The IMD has issued a more significant alert for April 29 to May 1, forecasting light to moderate rainfall at many places across the state. Notably, heavy rainfall ranging between 7–11 cm is likely at isolated places in North Tripura and Unakoti districts during this period. Thunderstorm activity with gusty winds is also expected to persist.
For the final two days of the forecast period (May 1–3), light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely to continue at many places across all districts.
In its temperature outlook, the IMD stated that maximum temperatures will remain above normal for the next 24 hours before settling to near-normal levels. Meanwhile, minimum temperatures are expected to stay 2–3°C below normal for the next three to four days.
According to IMD Agartala Station Director, Dr. Partha Roy, the maximum temperature on Sunday was recorded at 33.5 degrees Celsius, which is normal for April and minimum temperature recorded 21.6 degrees Celsius.
Although the maximum temperature is currently within the normal range, it is likely to decline in the coming days for thunderstorms.
Advisory and Impact:
The weather office has warned that thunderstorms may cause damage to crops, trees, and vulnerable structures, along with disruptions to power and communication lines. Lightning poses risks to people and livestock in open areas.
Heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas, temporary road closures, traffic disruptions, and minor landslides in vulnerable zones.
Residents have been advised to remain indoors during storms, avoid sheltering under trees, unplug electrical appliances, and stay away from water bodies and conductive objects during lightning events. Farmers are also advised to suspend agricultural activities during adverse weather conditions.
