Tripura police on Sunday carried out massive cannabis (Ganja) plantation destruction drives in different interior parts of North Tripura district.

Police sources said that a special operation against illicit cultivation of narcotic plants was conducted under the supervision of District Intelligence Branch (D.I.B) ,  SDPO Dharmanagar, along with the Officer-in-Charge, Churaibari Police Station.

During the operation on Sunday , police personnel of Churaibari police station, assisted by Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans, destroyed approximately 5000 ganja (cannabis) plants grown over a tilla land located at Katuacherra under Balicharra ADC Village.

The area, situated about 3 km away from the National Highway, is a remote and isolated location. The illicit cultivation was completely uprooted and destroyed on the spot, said police.

Sources said that this is for the first time, a large-scale cannabis plantation has been destroyed by the District Intelligence Branch (D.I.B) and Churaibari Police in the border area between Tripura and Assam in North Tripura district.

Although no arrests have been made so far, Churaibari police station have begun an investigation into the incident. According to police sources, a local group had been secretly cultivating and trading cannabis in that area for quite some time. However, no major raids or crackdowns had been carried out there until now.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Churaibari police station,  Debabrata Biswas said “Today’s operation was carried out based on confidential information. Around 5,000 cannabis plants have been destroyed. Similar operations will continue in the future.”

He further added that since the area is a remote hilly region, the police are currently investigating whether the land falls under a forest department reserve area or is privately owned. Police believe that the investigation will soon reveal the identities of those behind the illegal cannabis cultivation network.

He that such joint operations will continue in the coming days to curb all forms of illegal activity in the areas of Churaibari police station.
