Political activities have intensified in Tripura ahead of the upcoming Village Committees of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, with discussions gaining momentum over the positions of different political parties and possible electoral alliances.
A day after the Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) announced the schedule for elections to the Village Committees, hectic political activities have begun, with the ruling BJP and the opposition CPI(M) stepping up their preparations for the crucial polls.
On Tuesday, the peasant wing of opposition CPI (M), All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) started its three-day long 22nd state conference at Agartala Town Hall, drawing a large gathering of farmers, organization workers and supporters from different parts of Tripura.
The 22nd State Conference generated considerable enthusiasm in Agartala. Following the conference, a mass rally was organized at Vivekananda Maidan (Astable ground) in Agartala, where a large number of farmers, working-class people, organization workers and supporters, along with members of the general public, participated.
Addressing the gathering, speakers highlighted various demands of farmers, the need for fair prices for agricultural produce, government policies concerning the agricultural sector, and the livelihood-related problems faced by farmers.
Senior leaders of the organization attended the conference, along with CPI(M) leaders including Jitendra Chaudhury and Pabitra Kar and, as well as All India Kisan Sabha central leadership member Hannan Mollah and other prominent leaders.
The conference held detailed discussions on various issues faced by farmers, matters concerning agriculture and farmers’ interests, and the future course of the farmers’ movement in the present circumstances. Delegates from different districts and subdivisions of the state participated in the conference and shared their views.
While, addressing the large gathering at Vivekananda stadium, CPI(M) state secretary and opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury focused on various issues concerning the people of the tribal areas, including their rights, problems and development and alleged deprivation of farmers of the state.
Highlighting many current issues and suffering of common people, Chaudhury strongly appealed to the people of the state to strengthen their movements against ‘anti-people’ government of the state and be ready to give them suitable reply in coming elections.
During the rally, discussions were also held on undertaking various programmes in the coming days to safeguard farmers’ interests and further strengthen the organization.
The speakers also called for strengthening and uniting the farmers’ movement and urged greater mobilization over issues concerning farmers’ rights and interests.
The 22nd State Conference of the All India Kisan Sabha and the subsequent mass rally turned Agartala into a major gathering point for farmers and Left supporters. The programmes also conveyed a message of building a broader movement in the coming days over the demands and rights of farmers.
