Mob assault on police in Kadamtala; two police officers and 3 TSR jawans injured while rescuing a theft suspect
In a disturbing instance of lawlessness, two police officers and three TSR personnel were injured after an irate mob attacked them while they were attempting to rescue a theft suspect in Kadamtala area of North Tripura district.
The incident took place on Monday night in the Pratyeray village area under Kadamtala police station.
Sources said that a man was caught red-handed by local residents while allegedly attempting to steal a battery from an e-rickshaw. While one accomplice managed to flee, the villagers apprehended the other suspect, identified as Kabir Hossain (28), and allegedly began assaulting him.
Upon receiving information, a police team led by Kadamtala police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Sanjib Sarkar rushed to the spot. As police tried to rescue the injured suspect and take him to the hospital, tensions escalated. A section of the crowd reportedly blocked the police and allegedly attacked them with sticks and sharp weapons. During the clash, SI Sanjib Sarkar, ASI Jagananda Goswami, TSR jawans Nripendra Reang, Tanu Singh Tripura and Asit Lal Das sustained serious injuries.
Additional police and TSR forces were later deployed to bring the situation under control. The injured personnel were first taken to Kadamtala primary health centre and later shifted to Dharmanagar district hospital due to the severity of their injuries.
Police have registered a suo motu FIR against those involved in obstructing government officials from performing their duty, unlawful assembly, rioting, and attempt to murder. The case has been registered at Kadamtala police station (Case No. 12/2026). So far, Suman Debnath and his two sons, along with three others, have been arrested. Efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining accused.
Meanwhile, the arrested theft suspect was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Dharmanagar and was granted bail.
A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed concern over the growing trend of mob justice. “If accused persons are released on bail so easily even after attacking police personnel on duty, it raises serious questions. Such incidents could erode public faith in the rule of law,” the officer said.
The incident has triggered widespread concern in the area, with many viewing the attack on law enforcement as a troubling sign amid rising theft cases in the Dharmanagar subdivision.
