Moderate quake hits NE, Bangladesh no damage reported
A moderate intensity earthquake, measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale, hit parts of northeastern region of India and adjoining Bangladesh on Saturday morning, officials said.
A disaster management official of Tripura said in Agartala that the tremor was felt in several parts of the northeastern region including Tripura, Mizoram, parts of Assam and adjoining Bangladesh.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) the quake struck at a depth of 55 km from the surface at 9.05 a.m. on Saturday morning.
The Disaster Management officials of Tripura and Mizoram said that there was no immediate report of any casualty or damage to property.
Successive earthquakes in the mountainous northeastern states, especially in Assam, Mizoram and Manipur, have kept the authorities worried, forcing them to build quake-protective structures.
Seismologists consider the northeastern region as the sixth most earthquake-prone belt in the world.
