The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has taken up a major reform programme to make the state’s power system stronger, more modern, and uninterrupted.

Keeping pace with the steadily rising demand for electricity and improving the quality of power supply has now become the corporation’s primary objective and as part of this initiative, a decision has been taken to significantly enhance transformer capacity at three key substations in Agartala city.

TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu on Friday stated that over the past three years, electricity load in Agartala has been increasing at an average rate of 15 to 20 percent annually. This additional burden had been causing voltage fluctuations, frequent transformer failures, and irregular power supply in several areas and to provide a permanent solution to these issues, the corporation has planned capacity augmentation at the substation level.

According to official sources, the Pragati Power substation currently has two transformers of 7.5 MVA capacities each, totaling 15 MVA. These will now be replaced with two new transformers of 16 MVA capacities each, raising the total capacity of the substation to 32 MVA. Similarly, at the NSRCC substation, the existing 8 MVA transformer will be replaced with a new transformer of 16 MVA capacities.

Significant changes are also planned at the Badharghat Stadium Substation. At present, the substation has two transformers of 7.5 MVA capacities each. Very soon, one new transformer of 16 MVA capacity will be installed there, while one of the existing 7.5 MVA transformers will continue to operate. As a result, the total transformer capacity at this substation will increase from the current 15 MVA to 23.5 MVA. Once these works are completed, it will be possible to meet the city’s ever-growing power demand while effectively managing the rising load, and voltage levels can also be maintained in a more controlled manner, said Basu.

The electricity corporation has clarified that this reform process will not be limited to Agartala alone. Similar initiatives will be undertaken in phases across other districts and subdivision towns as well. In the next stage, there are plans to upgrade infrastructure even at the power sub-division level to ensure more reliable and uninterrupted services.

Speaking on the matter, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said that the present government’s objective is to provide quality and uninterrupted electricity supply to every citizen of the state. With this goal in mind, reforms in power management are being carried out in a planned manner. He also appealed to electricity consumers to cooperate with the corporation, stating that timely payment of electricity bills would entitle consumers to a 4 percent rebate, a benefit everyone should avail of.

At the same time, the minister issued a clear warning that electricity theft will not be tolerated under any circumstances. He urged citizens to inform the corporation if they come across any instances of power theft. According to the minister, timely bill payment and curbing electricity theft will make it possible to deliver improved, uninterrupted, and high-quality power services across the state.
