Neurology dept of GBP Hospital conducts a rare and complex brain hemorrhage surgery successfully

Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has recently set a shining example of public trust in the state’s healthcare system by successfully conducting a rare and complex brain hemorrhage surgery.

Initially, the patient’s family had considered seeking treatment outside the state, but ultimately placed their trust in GBP Hospital—and that decision saved a life. The entire incident sends out a strong and positive message.

On July 15, 2025, a 28-year-old woman was admitted to GBP Hospital with a brain hemorrhage. Assistant Professor Dr. Abir Lal Nath from the hospital’s Neurology Department informed the patient’s family that Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) and coiling were essential to save her life. However, the family wasn’t fully confident in the hospital’s capabilities and opted to visit CMC Vellore for advanced treatment. Interestingly, the doctors in Vellore also recommended the same DSA procedure, just as advised by the doctors at GBP.

Upon returning from Vellore, the patient’s family approached Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha and requested a referral to another advanced facility. At this point, the Chief Minister assured them that GBP Hospital is fully equipped to perform the procedure and that there was no need to seek treatment outside the state.

When the patient suffered a third hemorrhage, an urgent decision was taken to perform DSA and coiling. She was re-admitted to GBP Hospital on July 20, 2025. In this critical moment, Dr. Abir Lal Nath reassured the family that the entire treatment would be provided free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat card—a procedure that would otherwise cost approximately Rs 10 lakh in a private hospital outside the state.

On July 23, 2025, under the leadership of Dr. Abir Lal Nath, and with the dedicated support of Dr. Surajit Pal, Dr. Monimoy Debbarma, Sister-in-Charge Sebika Dutta, and nursing staff Pran Krishna Deb, Titiksha Majumdar, Sanjay Ghosh, Manas Dutta, and Debabrata Debnath—the aneurysm coiling was successfully completed. Although the size of the aneurysm was alarming, the team’s collective expertise ensured the complicated procedure was a success.

After the treatment, once the young woman stabilized, Dr. Nath and other hospital staff became overwhelmed with emotion. The patient’s mother and two sisters expressed their deep gratitude toward Dr. Nath. The hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, Director of Health Services Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Majumdar, and Health Secretary Kiran Gitte were informed of the success.

This achievement marks a significant step in restoring public confidence in the state’s healthcare infrastructure and medical professionals. It clearly proves that with proper guidance and faith, top-quality medical care is possible within the state. Through this success, GBP Hospital has once again highlighted its capability and commitment to the people of Tripura.
