Amid mounting tension over the mysterious death of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Dharmanagar Mandal president and councillor Rahul Kishore Roy, newly elected Dharmanagar MLA Jahar Chakraborty on Thursday visited the bereaved family to offer condolences.

Rahul Kishore Roy (34), councillor of Ward No. 5 of Dharmanagar Municipal Council, was found hanging in the bathroom of his residence on Tuesday (May 5th) morning, barely 24 hours after the declaration of the Dharmanagar by-election results. Since the recovery of the body, family members have alleged political vendetta, claiming that a BJP ‘uttariya’ was tied around his neck.

During the visit, an emotional scene unfolded as Rahul’s wife, Ananya Bhattacharya, broke down in tears upon seeing the MLA and directly questioned him over the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death.

“My in-laws, parents, sister-in-law, my husband and I all voted for the BJP. Despite supporting the party, my husband is no longer alive today. Before the elections, my mother-in-law had even gone to apologize for my husband’s mistake. Then why is a mother’s lap empty today? Why did my husband have to die?” she asked emotionally, demanding answers from the MLA.

A religious ceremony was being held at Rahul’s residence at the time of the visit. District BJP president Kajal Kumar Das, Dharmanagar Municipal Council chairperson Mitali Rani Das Sen and several other party leaders were also present.

Jahar Chakraborty, who reportedly could not visit earlier as he was away from Dharmanagar at the time of the incident, assured the grieving family of full support from both the party and the government.

“We are deeply saddened by Rahul’s tragic death. Our family also shares a close relationship with his family. Though no one can bring back the departed soul, the party and the government stand firmly beside them,” the MLA said.

He further stated that the administration is conducting an impartial investigation into the incident and expressed confidence that the real culprits, if any, would be identified and punished.

“The Bharatiya Janata Party and our government will do everything possible to support the family and ease their suffering during this difficult time,” he added.
