Police destroy massive Cannabis plants again in Bishalgarh
In an effort to curb illegal cannabis cultivation, the Sepahijala district police, along with other security forces, have continues their Cannabis (Ganja) plant destruction drive and have also intensified their operations over the past one month and destroy lakhs of Ganja plants from hundreds of acres of forest land.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, earlier through his social media message, praised the ongoing operation, stating “Commendable effort… A massive strike has been carried out against illegal ganja (cannabis) plantations in Sepahijala District, Tripura. The Government of Tripura remains firmly committed to building a #NeshaMuktTripura in line with Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of a drug-free India. In one month, 39, 08,500 plants have been destroyed.”
Despite the destruction drive closed for the past two days, Bishalgarh police station under Sepahijala district conducted a major raid on an illegal cannabis plantation on Friday afternoon.
Acting on a tip-off, a large police team along with TSR personnel, led by Officer-in-Charge(OC) Bijoy Das of Bishalgarh police station carried out the operation in the Purba Champamura area, adjacent to the Rajib Club under the same police station.
The illegal cannabis plantation had been developed on government ‘khas land’. During the raid, the police destroyed approximately 5,000 cannabis plants spread across several plots.
OC Bijoy Das stated that the police had been receiving confidential information for several days about the illegal cultivation in the Rajib Club area of Purba Champamura. Based on this intelligence, the operation was carried out and the plantation was dismantled.
However, the cultivators managed to flee the scene after sensing the arrival of the police, and no arrests were made during the operation.
Das further added that police sources have been deployed in the area to gather more information about other illegal cannabis plantations. Based on the inputs received, further raids will be conducted to eliminate all such unlawful cultivation in this area.
