Security review intensifies ahead of polls: DGP Anurag visits North district
With the upcoming ADC elections and the by-election in the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency approaching, the state administration has ramped up its preparations. Even before the official poll announcement, both the police and civil administration have stepped up efforts to strengthen security arrangements across the state.
As part of this initiative, Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar on Sunday visited North Tripura district and soon after arriving at Dharmanagar by the Kanchanjungha Express, he proceeded directly to the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) in North Tripura.
Then, DGP chaired a high-level review meeting with senior police and administrative officials from North Tripura and Unakoti districts. The meeting was attended by North Tripura District Magistrate (DM) Chandni Chandran, SP Avinash Rai, SP of Unakoti district, Sudhambika R, along with other top officials from the TSR and district police.
During the meeting, the DGP directed officials to deploy additional security personnel in all sensitive polling booths and to intensify surveillance along border areas to prevent infiltration or any other cross-border criminal activities.
After the review meeting, DGP speaking with media persons said that central forces have not yet been deployed for the ADC elections, but a request has already been made. He also assured that sufficient police and security forces are available in the state for the Dharmanagar by-election as well as ADC elections.
He said that apart from by-elections for Dharmanagar assembly constituency, two seats for ADC have fallen under North Tripura district and two more seats of Autonomous District Council (ADC) have also fallen under Unakoti district. An two more ADC seats have partly fallen under both districts, said DGP and added that elaborate arrangements are being made for both elections.
He said that the police administration at present is not leaving no-stone unturned to ensure free and fair elections with peace. “At present the law and order situation across the state is peaceful and police forces are working round the clock to maintain the same,” said DGP and assured the voters of the state to exercise their franchise without any fear. He also hoped that all the elections in Tripura on April 9th and April 12th will be conducted through festival mode and people of the state will maintain their tradition of peaceful elections this time also.
It may be recalled here that DGP’s visit in districts sends a clear message that the state police are fully prepared to handle any situation and ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner.
Dhankar has been touring various districts in recent days to assess the security situation. Prior to this visit, he held similar review meetings in Khowai, Dhalai, and Gomati districts also.
