A drug smuggler was arrested by plainclothes police personnel with a large quantity of Brown Sugar from the Gumrai Cherre area under Kalyanpur police station of Khowai district on Wednesday.

Police sources said that for nearly the past one year, the plainclothes police team had become a major source of fear for illegal drug smugglers across the Khowai district and police forces have also achieved major success in their strategy to arrest smugglers.

During the ADC elections, the plainclothes police personnel were assigned election-related duties. As a result, their anti-drug operations remained suspended for some time, allowing illegal narcotics traders to resume their activities. Following the conclusion of the elections, the police team resumed operations and on the very first day reportedly detained a Brown Sugar peddler from the Lalcherra area of Khowai.

This time, the crackdown reached Kalyanpur, where police seized around 200 vials of Brown Sugar weighing approximately 8 grams. The arrested smuggler has been identified as Liton Deb, son of Upendra Deb, a resident of Gumrai Cherra in Kalyanpur.

Reacting to the incident, Khowai District Additional Superintendent of Police, Justin Joseph  said that  to achieve the goal of ‘drug free Tripura, the district police will continue their  operations across the district  and he also appealed to the people to cooperate with police forces to stop drug menace.
