Solar technician training begins as Tripura approaches 5 MW PM Surya Ghar milestone

Tripura has added another feather to its renewable-energy crown. With the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana steadily expanding across the state, Tripura is now on the brink of achieving five megawatts of solar power generation. The momentum is clear, but the state wants more — not just in terms of power output, but in ensuring that every consumer can use the scheme without hassle, anxiety, or technical setbacks.

To strengthen that backbone, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited has launched a two-day specialised training programme for field-level technicians, with support from GIZ, the German development agency known globally for its expertise in renewable-energy capacity building.

The training was inaugurated on Thursday morning at 10:30 am at the TSECL conference hall. Power Secretary, Abhishek Singh, opened the session, joined by TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu and Acting Director General (TREDA) Debabrata Shukla Das. A total of 45 technicians began the workshop, each of them working directly with rooftop solar installations across different vendor networks in the state.

The message at the inauguration was simple: consumer satisfaction is non-negotiable. Singh stressed that every complaint must find quick, precise resolution at the hands of trained professionals. Basu, too, underlined that the future success of the PM Surya Ghar scheme depends heavily on the competence and conduct of the technicians who visit people’s homes. If they perform well, trust will deepen and more households will willingly embrace rooftop solar.

Behind this training stands GIZ’s deep global experience. The organisation has worked with multiple countries to strengthen solar-PV operation and maintenance training, develop standard curriculums, and prepare best-practice manuals. Their India-related guidelines — covering system monitoring, safety procedures, preventive maintenance, and advanced troubleshooting — serve as an important foundation for Tripura’s current programme.

The curriculum for this round of training mirrors those international standards. Participants are being taught the fundamentals of PV technology, the role and functioning of inverters, controllers, and battery systems, essential safety protocols, correct installation and commissioning procedures, structured maintenance routines, performance monitoring techniques, and fault detection.

This isn’t Tripura’s first step in skill-building. Earlier, 53 managers of the electricity corporation received GIZ-supported training at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala. More sessions for managers, vendors, and technicians are already in the pipeline. TSECL MD Basu also hinted that in the future, consumers who have installed rooftop solar systems may be offered basic awareness training so they can better understand and maintain their home units.

Tripura’s renewable-energy push is no longer just about ramping up generation. The state is putting equal emphasis on building a knowledgeable workforce and a reliable maintenance ecosystem. If this approach continues, Tripura’s solar journey is set to accelerate — and do so with public confidence firmly behind it.
