Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday said teachers play a pivotal role in nation-building and that a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) can only be realized through their knowledge, guidance and dedication.
Addressing the inaugural session of the 65th Teachers' Day celebration at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala, the Chief Minister said the teaching profession is one of the noblest and most respected, and called upon educators to inspire students with values, knowledge and character.
The programme was organized by the Higher Education Department.
Paying tribute to former President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, whose birth anniversary is observed as Teachers' Day, Dr. Saha said the renowned philosopher and educationist always took pride in identifying himself as a teacher.
"The contribution of teachers in building society is immeasurable. Dr Radhakrishnan's life and educational philosophy continue to inspire generations and serve as a guiding light for the future," the Chief Minister said.
He urged teachers to impart meaningful education that nurtures both knowledge and values, enabling students to contribute to the nation's progress.
"India was once a global leader in knowledge, science and culture. We must restore that glorious legacy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions a knowledge-based India by following the principle of 'Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi' (Heritage as well as Development)," he said.
Dr Saha said the National Education Policy (NEP) introduced by the Centre aims to transform the country's education system while integrating technology with learning to prepare students for future challenges.
Emphasizing the broader purpose of education, the Chief Minister said academic learning should not be confined to career-building alone.
"The real purpose of education is not merely to secure employment but to build character. Education should help individuals overcome limitations, develop skills, and realise their full potential," he said.
Calling for greater emphasis on quality education, Dr. Saha said strengthening human resources through value-based and skill-oriented education would accelerate the country's development.
"Quality education is the foundation of prosperity. It must be strengthened at every level so that students can become responsible citizens and lead the nation's transformation," he added.
Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman, Education Department Secretary Dr. Milind Ramteke, Vice-Chancellor of Tripura National Law University Yogesh Pratap Singh, Maharaja Bir Bikram University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Bibhas Deb, and Indian Institute of Information Technology (Agartala) Director Prof. Abhay Kumar were among those present at the programme.
