Three youths have been arrested in Tripura for allegedly extorting money from a motorist and assaulting a woman police sub-inspector who was on duty, police said.
The incident took place near a cafeteria in the Baramura hill ranges under Teliamura in Khowai district.
According to reports, the accused, identified as Dhruba Saha (21), Sudip Chakraborty (25) and Uttam deb (28), all residents of Shantinagar area under Teliamura police station of Khowai district stopped a motorist and demanded money from him. When the woman police officer intervened while carrying out her duty, the accused allegedly attacked her.
Police sources said that one Sanjit Chakma of Manikpur filed a complaint at Teliamura police station on Thursday night and alleged that unidentified youths obstructed his Bolero pick up van near a concrete overpass on National Highway-8 and extorted Rs. 2000.
Police added that responding to the complaint, police Sub-Inspector (SI) Sampa Das Gupta and Sumitra Debbarma along with three constables on night patrol reached the spot and when women SI Sampa Das Gupta arrived at the spot, a motorcycle rider allegedly hit her with his vehicle while his pillion rider pushed her, causing her to fall on NH-8 and sustained injuries.
Following the incident, police launched an immediate operation and arrested the three accused.
While, complainant Chakma identified the accused persons, after which police and TSR personnel arrested them and on Friday they were produced before a local court for further legal action.
Police also said that arrested accused also misbehaved with women police officers during their arrest.
The arrested persons are being questioned as part of the investigation. Police are also examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged extortion and assault.
The incident has raised concerns over the safety of police personnel while performing their duties. Further investigation is underway.
