A shocking incident unfolded in the Battala area of the state capital Agartala on Thursday after a driver allegedly fled with a traffic police officer clinging to the bonnet of his car while attempting to escape following an alleged hit-and-run.
Sources said that the incident occurred when the driver of a car allegedly struck a pedestrian and tried to flee the scene. Traffic police intercepted the vehicle, but during the attempt to stop it, the driver allegedly accelerated, carrying Traffic Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Biplab Dutta on the bonnet of the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said that other traffic constables and local traders in the Battala area tried to stop the car, but the driver ignored their efforts and sped away with the ASI still on the bonnet, creating panic and tension in the locality.
The driver reportedly drove up to the Pratapgarh Steel Bridge, where he allegedly threw ASI Biplab Dutta off the moving vehicle before escaping. The injured traffic officer was rescued and provided with necessary medical treatment.
Traffic police have already identified the registration number of the vehicle. A case has been registered by the Traffic Department at the West Agartala police station, and a search operation has been launched to arrest the accused driver.
Speaking about the incident, DySP(Traffic) Dulal Dutta said that the vehicle had been intercepted after it was accused of hitting a pedestrian. However, the driver fled by carrying the on-duty Traffic ASI on the bonnet of the car. He confirmed that the vehicle has been identified and that an investigation is underway to apprehend the accused.
