Demanding the early codification of customary laws followed by different indigenous communities of Tripura, the Tripura Tribal Customary Law Coordination Committee has called for a mass sit-in demonstration on December 7.
The decision was taken at a meeting of traditional community leaders representing various indigenous communities at Agartala Press Club on Sunday. Addressing a press conference after the meeting, committee representatives announced their agitation programme and expressed dissatisfaction over the delay in granting statutory recognition to the customary laws.
The committee alleged that 14 customary law bills, unanimously passed at a session of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) on December 28, 2022, have yet to be fully codified.
Despite repeated appeals to the state government and the ADC administration, no effective steps have been taken to implement the demand, the committee claimed.
As part of its agitation, the committee will organize a three-hour mass sit-in demonstration from 12 noon on December 7 at the foot of the Gandhi statue near Circuit House in Agartala.
The committee further warned that if the authorities fail to take concrete steps to fulfill their demands even after the proposed demonstration, it will call for a Tripura bandh.
