The Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday organized a mass protest meeting in front of Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala, condemning an alleged derogatory remark by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s father.
BJP leaders strongly criticized the Congress over the alleged remark and also targeted the CPI(M) over its political positions.
The protest was attended by MLAs Bhagaban Das and Dipak Majumder, MLA Meena Rani Sarkar, Sadar Urban district BJP president Ashim Bhattacharya and other party workers.
Addressing the gathering, BJP leaders said the alleged remark was contrary to political decorum and democratic values. They maintained that while political differences were natural in a democracy, leaders should exercise restraint in their language and respect one another.
The BJP leaders said opposition parties had every right to criticize the Prime Minister and his government on political grounds, but such criticism should not cross the line into personal attacks or derogatory comments about family members.
They said the protest was organized to register the party’s objection to the alleged remark and highlight what they described as the need to maintain dignity in political discourse.
The speakers also criticized the Congress’s political approach, arguing that political parties should focus on public welfare, development and issues affecting ordinary people rather than resorting to personal attacks. They also levelled criticism against the CPI (M) over its political stand.
Through the protest, the Tripura BJP reiterated its opposition to the alleged comment and called for greater restraint and civility in political exchanges.
