Tripura Govt takes initiatives to achieve full self-sufficiency in fish production: Minister Sudhangshu Das
The Tripura government, in collaboration with the Union government, has undertaken multiple initiatives to achieve full self-sufficiency in fish production, said Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das on Friday.
Speaking at the state-level celebration of World Fisheries Day 2025 at Muktadhara Auditorium in Agartala, the Minister expressed confidence that with the committed efforts of the Fisheries Department and active participation of fish farmers, Tripura is poised to achieve 100 percent self-reliance in fish cultivation in the near future.
He informed that Tripura currently produces 89,000 metric tonnes of fish annually, while the state’s demand stands at 1.19 lakh metric tonnes. To bridge this gap, the government is implementing various schemes aimed at enhancing production capacity and supporting the overall development of fish farmers.
Highlighting this year’s national theme for World Fisheries Day — ‘Blue Transformation: Strengthening Value Addition in Seafood Exports’ — the Minister noted that it reflects India’s renewed emphasis on expanding economic opportunities in the fisheries sector. “Tripura is aligning its initiatives with this vision by focusing on both increased production and value addition,” he said.
On the occasion, benefits under several government schemes were distributed to eligible fish farmers from different parts of the state. The Minister said these measures are designed to encourage more individuals to take up fish farming while enabling existing farmers to achieve financial stability and self-reliance.
He further stressed that strengthening rural livelihoods through fisheries remains the government’s top priority, which will help reduce import dependence and position Tripura as a model state in aquaculture.
The event also featured expert discussions on modern technology in fisheries, sustainable fish farming practices, and the sector’s contribution to strengthening the rural economy.
