In a successful operation, police personnel of Dharmanagar under North Tripura district on Wednesday seized huge quantities of dry Cannabis (Ganja) concealed in a specially built secret compartment inside a goods vehicle and arrested two drug peddlers during a Naka checking at Anandabazar area of the district.

Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a four-wheeler goods carrier bearing registration number TR01BC1518 at the Anandabazar Naka checking point under Dharmanagar police station.

According to police, the operation was led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Meena Debbarma, assisted by a large contingent of police personnel and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans. The vehicle, which was travelling from Agartala towards Dharmanagar, was stopped after arousing suspicion.

During a thorough search, police discovered a specially fabricated hidden chamber beneath black plastic trays inside the vehicle. On opening the compartment, officers recovered 20 bundles of dry Ganja weighing approximately 195 kg. Police said the contraband had been meticulously concealed in the secret chamber, making its recovery a challenging task.

The driver and co-driver of the vehicle were arrested. They have been identified as Jolal Uddin, son of late Dulal Mia of Ramnagar, Agartala, and Momin Miah, son of Mukhles Miah of Border Gol Chakkar, Agartala.

According to the preliminary estimate of the police, the seized Ganja has a black-market value of around Rs 20–25 lakh.

Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the source of the contraband, the persons involved in supplying it, and its intended destination. Investigators are also probing whether a larger inter-district drug trafficking network is linked to the seizure.

Legal proceedings have been initiated against the detained persons, and the seized contraband has been taken into police custody for further investigation.
