A woman was killed and a 10-year-old girl sustained injuries in a tragic road accident near Kalacherra Railway Station in South Tripura district on Sunday.
Local sources said that, Sabita Das (45), a resident of Kalacherra, had opened the gate of her house and was preparing to go for her morning walk, as she did every day. At that time, she was accompanied by her neighbour Kamal Roy’s 10-year-old daughter, Sangita Roy.
It is alleged that a newly purchased Maruti WagonR car bearing temporary registration number TR9400C, which was travelling from Agartala to Sabroom, lost control and first rammed into Sabita Das and Sangita Roy. The vehicle then crashed into a roadside restaurant before ploughing into the house of Amulya Das.
Local residents alleged that the car was being driven by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Purnya Tripura of Santirbazar police station. However, the police have not yet issued any official statement confirming or denying the allegation.
Hearing the loud crash, local residents rushed to the spot and rescued the injured. Both victims were taken to the Kalacherra Primary Health Centre. As Sabita Das’s condition deteriorated, she was referred to Santirbazar District Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. The injured girl, Sangita Roy, is currently undergoing treatment.
The incident has triggered concern and tension in the locality. Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
