Woman thief arrested with stolen cash in Udaipur; panic gripped over growing incidents of robbery
A woman has been arrested on charges of stealing Rs 25,000 by RK Pur police station area of Udaipur under Gomati district on Saturday, triggering fresh concern over rising theft incidents in the town.
The incident took place on Friday near Gada Chowmuhani and a wallet containing approximately Rs 25,000 and several important documents was stolen from a locker inside the rented residence of Dr Arpan Bhattacharya, a tenant at the house of Keshab Paul.
In another incident, thieves raided a motor vehicle mechanic shop in the Rajarbag area of the town and stole away many valuable items including batteries.
While police giving details of the theft incidents said that, Dr. Bhattacharya discovered the theft while leaving for Gomati District Hospital in the morning when he could not find the wallet in his locker. After searching the house unsuccessfully, he checked CCTV footage, which showed an unidentified woman cleverly entering the room and taking the wallet from the locker. He immediately informed the police and handed over the footage.
Police sources said that under the supervision of Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Debanjali Roy, an investigation was launched promptly. Based on the footage, police conducted a raid the same night and detained the accused woman from her parental home in the Gokulpur area.
The arrested woman has been identified as Rinku Debnath (44). Police recovered Rs 23,100 out of the stolen Rs 25,000 from her possession. Preliminary investigation revealed that she allegedly entered houses on the pretext of seeking work and committed theft.
Police stated that she has been produced before a local Court on Saturday for further legal proceedings.
While, mechanic shop owner Uttam Karmakar said that during the raids by unknown thieves in his shop on Friday night, thieves had stolen away valuable items worth Rs. 50 to 60 thousands.
The incidents have drawn mixed reactions among residents. While many praised the police for quick action and recovery of money, concerns remain over a series of recent thefts across Udaipur. Citizens are demanding stricter surveillance and regular patrolling, urging authorities to take stronger long-term measures to curb the growing crime trend.
