Chinese coast guard incursions reported close to Taiwan's Dongsha Island

By IBNS
Jul 14, 2025..

Taiwan's Coast Guard has said two Chinese missile vessels have made incursions near Dongsha Island in the South China Sea, media reports said on Monday.

The two Chinese coast guard ships disabled their automated identification systems to conceal their movements, Taiwan News reported quoting UDN.

The first incursion occurred at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday by the China coast guard ship No. 3101 about 42.5 nautical miles (79 km) northeast of the island. The second incursion happened at 9 a.m. when China coast guard ship No. 5303 approached within 43 nautical miles of Dongsha Island on Thursday, July 10, the news portal reported.

What is the basis of China’s claim over Taiwan?

The basis of China’s claim over Taiwan dates back to 1945 when Japan lost its control over the island in 1945,post-World War Two. The 1949 Chinese civil war lead to communists taking control and Chiang Kai-shek the one who lost fled to Taiwan. He ruled it for many decades. This is where China’s claim to Taiwan emanates. The very fact that Chiang Kai-shek came to Taiwan and was not indigenous to the place is Taiwan’s argument against the claim.
