Imran Khan arrest: NAB gets 8-day physical remand, violent protests continue across Pakistan

Islamabad: A Pakistani court on Wednesday granted eight-day remand of former PM Imran Khan, who was arrested in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust case, to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), media reports said.

Separately, a sessions court also indicted the PTI chief in the Toshakhana case. Both the hearings were held at the Islamabad Police Lines, which was given the status of a court venue as a “one-time dispensation” late on Tuesday night, amid tight security, reports Dawn News.

During the hearing of the Al-Qadir Trust case, the corruption watchdog requested the court to grant 14-day remand of Imran. Judge Mohammad Bashir presided over the hearing, the newspaper reported.

The PTI chairman’s lawyer, Khawaja Harris, opposed the request and said that the case did not fall within the bureau’s ambit. He further said that NAB had not shared the inquiry report either.

Pakistan witnessing violent protests:

Khan was arrested on Tuesday, triggering violent protests in different parts of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the Army has been called in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Balochistan amid violence in the regions.

So far, violence has claimed four lives in Peshawar, media reports said.

Police have arrested hundreds of supporters of ousted prime minister Imran Khan for violence, reports Geo News.

Four bullet-riddled bodies were received by the emergency room doctors, a spokesperson for Lady Reading Hospital (LHR) told Geo News, while as many as 27 others were under treatment for traumatic injuries related to agitation.

Internet service suspension:

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Wednesday said that internet services across the country will remain suspended for an indefinite period amid ongoing violence.
