The golden age of America begins right now: President Donald Trump at inaugural address
Washington DC/IBNS: Taking oath as the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump said the "golden age" of America has begun and the country will be "greater than ever before."
"The golden age of America begins right now. From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer during every single day of the Trump administration," Trump said amid massive applause and standing ovations.
In a message filled with hope and threats, as well as indirect digs at the outgoing government led by Joe Biden, Trump, who won a historic mandate in November despite losing in 2020, referred to the assassination attempt on him in Pennsylvania in July and said he was "saved by God to make America great again".
As promised, he declared to sign a series of executive orders on his first day of office including a "national emergency" at the southern border in Mexico and an order to send back all illegal migrants to their home countries.
"All illegal entry will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came," Trump promised.
Trump announced a "national energy emergency" that would allow oil extractors to "drill, baby drill" - issues that had been key campaign pitches and resonated with his 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA) supporters.
Announcing tax reliefs, the Republican said: "We will not add the tax burden on our citizens. Instead, we will add tariffs on foreign countries, which will bring in immense amounts of money and make America rich again."
Donald Trump said US policy will also be changed such that America will recognise and be home only to two genders - male and female.
"I will also end the government policy of trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life... As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female," he said.
"America will also end the new Green Policy of EVs (electric vehicles) and save our great auto industry," he said.
The 47th president promised to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America in the next few days.
"America will return to being a great economy again and will focus on expanding its territories. We will take back the Panama Canal, which was foolishly given away and is now being run by China," he said.
"America will restore its science glory and send more Astronauts to space than ever before. The US will on priority send the stars and stripes (US flag) to Mars," the President added..
The Chief Justice of the US administered the oath of office. Besides Trump, Republican politician JD Vance also took oath as the Vice President of the US.
Both Donald Trump and JD Vance had their wives Melania Trump and Indian-origin Usha Vance by their side during the swearing-in.
The ceremony was moved inside to the U.S. Capitol Rotunda due to inclement weather conditions, the first time since Ronald Reagan's second inauguration 40 years ago. The weather forecast has predicted this to be the coldest inauguration in 40 years.
Trump earlier arrived at The White House and met his predecessor Joe Biden, who welcomed the President-elect to 'home' for tea.
Donald Trump became only the second President in US history, after Grover Cleveland in 1893, to return to power after being voted out of the White House.
Trump also made history by replacing Joe Biden as the oldest President of the United States.
Trump's return to the Oval Office has been quite a dramatic one that saw him defy two assassination attempts and a criminal conviction to win the historic election, including him registering a win in every single swing state in the country.
His Republican party has returned to power with a majority in both the House of Representatives, as well as the Senate, giving President Trump massive power to push through any agendas he feels necessary.
