UK Police arrest man over ‘racially aggravated’ rape of Punjabi-origin woman in Walsall
A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the racially aggravated rape of a 20-year-old Indian-origin woman in Walsall, northern England, on Saturday evening, media reports said.
West Midlands Police said the suspect, described as a white male with short hair and wearing dark clothing, was arrested following a manhunt that began after officers released CCTV footage of the alleged attacker.
Detective Superintendent Ronan Tyrer, who is leading the investigation, called the arrest a “significant development,” particularly in light of a similar case last month involving the rape of a British Sikh woman in nearby Oldbury, less than 20 km away.
Two men aged 49 and 65 were arrested in that case but have since been released on bail, according to the BBC.
“The young woman has been informed of the arrest,” DS Tyrer said. “Our investigation continues, and our priority remains the wellbeing of the victim. She is being supported by specially trained officers.”
Police have stated that, at this stage, they are not linking the Walsall attack to any other incidents.
The Sikh Federation UK confirmed the victim is of Punjabi heritage.
The assaults have sparked outrage in the West Midlands community. Preet Kaur Gill, Labour and Co-operative MP and member of the Sikh community, said she was “deeply shocked” by the Walsall incident.
“The repeated pattern of violence against women in our region, compounded by hate and racial overtones, is deeply disturbing,” she wrote on X.
Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby of Walsall Police said additional officers will be deployed in the area to reassure the public.
“Walsall is a diverse area, and we understand the fear and concern this attack will cause. Our officers are engaging with local communities to listen to their worries, and there will be an increased policing presence in the coming days,” he said.
