Air India San Francisco–Delhi flight makes precautionary landing in Mongolia after technical alert
An Air India flight from San Francisco to Delhi made an unscheduled landing in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, after the crew detected a possible technical issue mid-air, the airline said on Monday.

In a statement, Air India confirmed that the Boeing 777 aircraft landed safely and that all passengers and crew were safe. The aircraft is currently undergoing technical checks in Ulaanbaatar.
“The aircraft landed safely at Ulaanbaatar and is undergoing the necessary inspections. We are working closely with our partners to support all passengers while making every effort to get them to their destination at the earliest opportunity,” Air India said.
The airline also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by what it described as an “unforeseen situation,” adding that passenger and crew safety remains its top priority.
Flight-tracking website Flightradar24.com showed that the aircraft diverted to Mongolia during its transpolar route toward India.
Details about the number of passengers on board were not immediately available.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it is coordinating with Mongolian authorities and Air India to assist passengers stranded in Ulaanbaatar.
The precautionary diversion marks one of the rare instances of an Indian long-haul commercial flight landing in Mongolia, a country that sits on the route between North America and South Asia.
