Congress protests against Election Commission, burns CEC effigy

The Tripura Pradesh Congress organised a protest programme in the Office Lane area of Agartala, near the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, on Friday, demanding the resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

Party workers and supporters also burnt an effigy of the CEC as part of the demonstration. Senior Congress leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman, Tripura Pradesh Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha and other senior party leaders, workers and supporters participated in the programme.

Addressing the gathering, Sudip Roy Barman said that the people of the country would, in the coming days, remove the BJP government as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah from power. He said the people would give their response through the democratic process.

Congress workers raised various slogans questioning the functioning of the Election Commission during the protest.

The demonstration was part of a wider Congress campaign announced for September 25, under which state units were asked to organise protests at State Election Commission offices while demanding action against CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
