Jadavpur University student Soumyadeep Mahanto arrested for arson gets interim bail
Kolkata/IBNS: Jadavpur University (JU) student Soumyadeep Mahanto, who was arrested for arson, has been granted an interim bail by the Alipore court, media reports said.
Mahanto was on Tuesday granted bail against a bond of Rs. 5,000 for each case.
He has been directed to appear before the investigating officer at Jadavpur Police Station regularly till July 30 when the court will next hear the case.
The undergraduate philosophy student was on March 12 arrested for allegedly setting the office of a non-teaching employees' union on fire.
He was later named in the case over the alleged 'Azad Kashmir' graffiti which was written on the JU campus.
The arson took place on March 1 when Left and ultra-Left students protested and attempted to block the entry of West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu into the campus.
One protester was seriously injured when he tried to stop Basu's car.
Meanwhile, one more undergraduate student, named Souptik Chanda who studies civil engineering, was on Tuesday arrested in connection with the arson.
Nine First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered.
