Prosenjit, Rituparna, Dev, Mimi, other Tollywood celebs demand justice in RG Kar rape and murder case

Tollywood veteran Prosenjit Chatterjee posted on X, "... I also stand firmly by the demand for justice. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the truth comes to light and that those responsible are held accountable.

"Let us unite in our resolve to bring justice to the victim and to ensure that such tragedies never happen again."

Rituparna Sengupta wrote on Facebook, "How many more blows will the families suffer? Is there no safety anywhere - in colleges, hospitals, or elsewhere? Death in this manner? Why? What's the explanation? We are disheartened... angry... why so much injustice? Why??? This innocent life will never return. What was the girl's fault? We lost a doctor... why so much brutality???? Feeling suffocated."

Dev, who called off his film promotions on Wednesday, said, "At this time, our focus should be on seeking justice for the victim. We urge that the guilty be swiftly brought to justice.  Our heart goes out to the victim's family, and we stand with them in the pursuit of justice."

Jeet posted on X, "We are a day away from Independence Day, but at times a question remains: have we truly achieved freedom? Why are women in our society still targeted?... I cannot fathom what she must have gone through, no words can define their pain. I am speechless and disgusted by what has happened in RG Kar Hospital.

"Women's safety should be of utmost importance in the wake of a New India. I request all the authorities involved to serve justice and grant capital punishment to the culprit."

Mimi Chakraborty wrote on X, "Each and every street is roaring today #WeWantJustice #Westandunited #JusticeForDoctors #RGKarcase."

Nussrat Jahan wrote in an Instagram post, "The heinous incident at R.G. Kar Medical College has raised many disturbing questions. Are women safe at all? Is working late an invitation to violence? Are we truly independent? As we approach the 78th Independence Day, it is painfully clear that Kolkata is longer the City of Joy."

"I stand in solidarity with this fight for justice. To all those in authority, power and position, I extend my request to take action immediately," she added.

Abir Chatterjee wrote on X, "No words of condolences will ever be enough for the family. What has happened and what is happening is horrific, unacceptable to say the least. The much needed voices of protest that are being raised from every corner by the general citizens are undoubtedly the need of the hour. Justice needs to be served as early as possible. Also, let us not forget...

"The questions that are being raised, should not lose their proper directions. The anger, the frustration should not get lost in whatabouteries. Common people should never be taken for granted. It's high time everyone realises that."

Expressing solidarity with the agitating medical students, noted Indian filmmaker Aparna Sen on Tuesday said she felt ashamed over the rape and murder of a PG trainee doctor in Kolkata's state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Participating in a protest rally condemning the rape and murder of the female doctor and expressing her support to the agitating students, Sen said: "I have come here today as a person who lives in Kolkata. I completely support the demands of the students. As a resident of this city, I feel ashamed today."

Actress Subhashree Ganguly and her husband, director Raj Chakraborty, quoted Mahatma Gandhi in condemning the incident.

About the RG Kar incident that triggered widespread protests

The 31-year-old medical student was allegedly raped and murdered at the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which is located in North Kolkata's Belgachia area, last week.

Though the civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the case, protesting students, who went for ceasework across the state, suspect more people are involved in the case. The authorities, including the hospital, are accused of evidence tampering before the CBI steps in.

Social media is also rife with posts on how the ruling Trinamool Congress women MPs are silent on the issue since the news broke.

Now former RG Kar College principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who resigned after the students' protests, had reportedly stirred a controversy by passing the blame to the victim itself.

The administration has come under the scanner as the victim's parents claimed they were initially told that the 31-year-old committed suicide.

However, the autopsy report claimed she had multiple injuries to her body and some doctors even suspect it was gangrape going by the incident medically.

Though West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed she had no objection to the CBI probe, protesters and netizens slammed her for giving a seven-day deadline to police to wrap up the investigation before handing over the matter to the central probe agency.

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday snubbed the Chief Minister's deadline and handed over the case to the CBI, which will probe into the matter under the monitoring of the judiciary.

The accused civic volunteer was on Wednesday handed over to the CBI by police.
