'Be in love with the grind and the game will give back': Shubman Gill after India's historic Test win in Edgbaston

Birmingham/IBNS: Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill led from the front with his bat as the team clinched their first win ever at Edgbaston in Birmingham overpowering England by 336 runs on Sunday.

Gill, who was declared the Player of the Match, scored a double hundred in the first innings and followed it with a big hundred in the second to virtually drive the hosts out of the game.

As a proud captain, Gill posted on X, "Be in love with the grind and the game will give back."

Gill slammed 269 in the first innings as India piled a mammoth 587. England responded with 407.

Bagging a healthy lead, India repeated their brilliance with bat in the second innings where they scored 427-6 declared. Gill top scored for the side with 161 off 162 balls even in the second innings.

The newly-appointed skipper, however, reminded his players about the bigger goal, that is to win the series as three more matches are yet to be played.

India squared the five-match series 1-1 at Edgbaston where Akash Deep punctured the English batting in the weekend as the pacer bagged 10 wickets in the match.

Gill said, "I was meant to take the last catch of this match and very content and happy that now we were able to finish this match. But I think there are three more important matches to go and a quick turnaround after this one and I think it's good for us because now we have the momentum."

"In this match, the way everyone came and contributed with the ball and bat, those are huge positives. When there are different people stepping up and performing at different stages, that's what makes a champion team...," added the 25-year-old.

The third Test will be played at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London on July 10-14.
