Eustaquio struck in the second minute of added time, firing home from outside the penalty area sending the co-host nation into the last 16.

The victory was Canada's first-ever knockout-stage win at a FIFA Men's World Cup and came just days after the team advanced beyond the group stage for the first time, underscoring the rapid rise of Canadian soccer on the global stage.

Canada dominated much of the contest but struggled to break down a disciplined South African defence until Eustaquio's late breakthrough.

Captain Alphonso Davies made his first appearance of the tournament after recovering from injury, entering in the second half and helping inject pace into Canada's attack.

Midfielder Ismael Kone, who suffered a broken leg earlier in the tournament, celebrated with teammates after the victory in emotional scenes that quickly spread across social media, symbolising the team's resilience during its historic campaign.

A decade of transformation

Canada's latest achievement reflects years of steady investment in the sport rather than a sudden breakthrough.

The men's national team spent decades on the fringes of international football after its only previous World Cup appearance in 1986, when it exited the tournament without scoring a goal.

According to CBC Sports and Canada Soccer, the programme's revival accelerated after the establishment of the Canadian Premier League in 2019, expanded youth development pathways, and the emergence of players competing in Europe's top leagues.

Canada returned to the World Cup in 2022 after a 36-year absence, topping the final round of CONCACAF qualifying ahead of Mexico and the United States.

Although the team exited in the group stage in Qatar, it scored its first-ever World Cup goal through Alphonso Davies and gained valuable experience against elite opposition, according to CBC Sports.

Since then, Canada has continued to build momentum under head coach Jesse Marsch, who took charge in 2024.

The team reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Copa América in its tournament debut and has climbed the FIFA rankings while producing consistent performances against top international opponents.

Former Canadian captain Christine Sinclair described the latest success, as reported by Reuters, an evidence that Canada has become "truly a soccer country", saying the men's team's run is inspiring a new generation in a nation traditionally dominated by ice hockey.

She also noted that the 2026 World Cup is expected to leave a lasting legacy despite ongoing infrastructure challenges.

Canada is co-hosting the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Mexico, with matches staged in Toronto and Vancouver.

Reports say the tournament has accelerated public interest in the sport while strengthening Canada's reputation as an emerging football nation.

With a place in the Round of 16 secured for the first time, Canada's best-ever World Cup campaign has already rewritten the country's football history.

Canada will face Morocco in Houston on July 4 for a place in the quarter-finals.
