LA Olympics 2028: Cricket matches to begin on July 12, check all details about timing and venue
Cricket will return to the Olympic fold after more than 100 years and organisers have unveiled the dates when the games will be played in the Los Angeles edition of the grand event in 2028.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed that the T20 competitions for the men’s and women’s categories at the LA28 will run from July 12 to July 29.
The clashes to win medals will be held on July 20 (women’s) and July 29 (men’s).
In 1900, cricket was played in the Paris Games and did not feature in the 128 years until Los Angeles will witness the return of the gentlemen's game.
"Most of the matchdays will be double headers, with the games starting from 9:00 AM and 6:30 PM as per local Los Angeles time. It’s the same for the medal matches," read the Olympic website.
In April, the council confirmed that six teams would be competing in each of the men’s and women’s tournaments.
A total of 90 athlete quotas have been allocated for each gender, allowing every team to name a 15-member squad, the Olympic website said.
The matches will be played at the Pomona Fairplex, about 50 km from downtown Los Angeles.
Did cricket find a place in any multisport event in the past?
Despite its absence in the Olympics, cricket was played in several events like the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games in the past.
A men’s cricket tournament was held at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, while the women’s game made its CWG debut at Birmingham 2022.
Both men’s and women’s cricket tournaments, played in the popular T20 format, were part of the Asian Games in 2010, 2014 and 2023.
